Chinese technology giant Huawei (pronounced "wah-way"), with US headquarters in Plano, TX, has tapped Racepoint Global as AOR following a competitive review. The new shop will handle all PR work for Huawei and its digital brand Honor. Racepoint will implement new initiatives to help drive Huawei's smartphone brand awareness in the US and North American markets (still not allowed to sell telecom products stateside).

Having entered the smartphone industry just five years ago, the company wants to ramp up consumer awareness. So, the new shop will specifically work to promote the company's brand as a whole, versus individual devices.

With that said, expect a bigger US campaign to launch by Q4 2018, when consumer electronic sales rise for holiday gift giving. For now, look for social/earned media and digital revenue ahead of this holiday season. Huawei is already a relatively large digital display spender, per Pathmatics.

Agencies - Huawei's US CMO Yanyan Ji left the company last fall, and in 2015, the company named Omnicom's DDB, New York as creative, digital and media AOR. We're still trying to figure out who replaced Ji.
